How Do the Tacoma and Tundra Compare

How Do the Tacoma and Tundra Compare

The Toyota Tacoma was introduced to replace the Toyota Pickup truck in 1995. It was a mid-size truck that became a bestseller in the U.S. market. Later on, in 1999, the company launched the Tundra as the full-size truck in the North American market. The Tundra was introduced by Toyota in order to compete with many existing bigger names in the segment. Both of these trucks are assembled in southern parts of the country. They differ on many counts including their engine, size and features.

Differences in Exteriors

Each of these trucks have distinctive aesthetics. While the Tundra is much larger in stature than the Tacoma, there are many other differences in their exterior features. The front-end designs, especially grilles, in both trucks are noticeably different. The Tacoma has an angular grille that’s well-defined while the Tundra is blockier in its appearance. The sleek front-end of the Tacoma is less obtrusive and the grille of the Tundra has a hood bulge above it. On the back, both of them have a similar tailgate characterized by embossed lettering. These design variations may differ per trim levels of the Tacoma or Tundra.

Differences in Interiors

Despite dissimilarities in their exteriors, both of these trucks have many similarities in the interior. The basic models have standard power windows, mirrors and door locks. There is a reverse camera equipped from the factory. However, they differ in terms of spacing. While the Tacoma can seat four to five passengers in its Double Cab, the Tundra has space to fit nearly six passengers in its Double Cab. The Tacoma has a quiet cabin that reduces wind noise due to its enhanced aerodynamics. On the other hand, the 2018 Tundra was launched with many upgraded features in its interior like power seats and memory driver’s seat that aren’t available in the Tacoma.

Differences in Performance

When it comes to performance, both of these vehicles are integrated with top-notch details that enhance their road capabilities. In the 2018 Tacoma, the company retained the old engine but replaced the five-speed manual transmission with the six-speed version. This vehicle has a 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine that churns out 180 lb-ft torque and up to 159 horsepower. The off-road edition of this truck comes equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine and many high-end features like crawl control, multi-terrain select system, hill-start assist control, regulated traction control and many others.

In comparison to this, the Tundra offers more power and better towing capabilities. The standard engine option of this truck is the V8 i-FORCE 4.6-liter engine emanating 327 lb-ft torque and up to 310 horsepower. Intelligent features like overhead cam, intelligent variable valve timing and 32-valve head design make the Tundra a powerhouse that offers a lot of interesting features.

Which One Should You Choose?

It depends on your specific requirements. If you are looking for a truck that’s small and easy to maneuver, the Tacoma is the right choice for you. But if you need a heavy-duty pickup truck, you should buy the Tundra that comes with roomy interiors and a longer truck bed. The Tundra is also a better option for those who need a family truck for comfortable long drives. Preferably, visit the nearest dealership to compare both and make your decision.
