When and How to Change the Oil in Your Car

When and How to Change the Oil in Your Car

One of the most important tasks that you need to keep in mind while thinking about the overall soundness of your car is the amount of oil that is left in the car and the frequency of when you need to change it. To keep your car running smoothly for a long time, it is imperative to have a tank filled with sufficient amounts of engine or motor oil.

The motor oil constitutes a major and essential portion of your car engine and is responsible for keeping all internal systems well lubricated and cool enough to run well for longer durations. That’s why it’s a vital maintenance step to take up the task of keeping a tab on the levels and changing the oil in your car on a regular basis.

When Should You Consider Changing the Oil

Some cars are equipped with systems that notify the driver as to when the engine oil levels are low. In other cases, cars come with instruction manuals that contain detailed notes about how frequently the motor oil must be changed per the needs of the particular model or prototype.

Other Pointers to Keep in Mind:

  • Follow the conventional 3,000-mile or three-month mark whenever you think of changing the motor oil in your car.
  • Keep a tab on the level of oil by using a dipstick or looking down the oil tank once every month.
  • Keep an eye out for any kind of leak from the underside of the car and then consider getting it fixed since this might cause harm to your car.
  • If you’re experiencing a noise emitting from your engine or a certain amount of bumpiness in your ride, check the oil tank immediately and consider refilling it.

Changing the Oil

Since changing the motor oil is a process that has to be carried out several times, it is better to administer it yourself since you can save a lot of money by doing so and it is not a herculean task.

  • Lock the Wheels: The first thing you need to make sure is that the car is rendered immobile at the spot at which it is parked. Lock the wheels using restraints or wheel locks so that the wheels stay firm.
  • Use Your Car Jack: Refer to the car’s user manual and find the best spot to jack the car up to. Once this is done, place a jack stand to hold the elevated part in place.
  • Let the Old Oil Flow: Open up the oil cap and the oil plug from under the hood and beneath the car respectively. Keep a drain pan under the oil plug so that all the excess, old oil collects in there.
  • Change the Filter and Add New Oil: Remove the old oil filter from the underside and replace it with a new one. Close the oil plug and add the new oil in the tank. Screw the oil cap in place and you’re done changing the oil.

These are a few tips you must keep in mind as far as changing the oil in your car is concerned.
